		<description>I think one thing that should be looked at as well is that Conan had his own show and following before he took over The Tonight Show.  Jay Leno had no such show and had to build his following from scratch and left overs from Johnny Carson.&lt;br /&gt;

It would be interesting to see what Conan&#039;s ratings were with his show compared to The Tonight Show.  I&#039;m not sure I buy into the idea that the lead in show impacts the preceeding show as much as they would like you to believe.&lt;br /&gt;

I wonder what the bottom of this really is; did NBC ask Leno to leave in 2004 because they were afraid of losing Conan and now are begging Leno to come back because of ratings, or did Leno choose to leave and now wants back in because of the ratings of his new show?  I find it hard to believe that he really wanted to leave if he was just getting another show immediately after.  Sounds like they pushed him out and gave him a show as a consolation :).</description>
